Creativity Caught Me Making

ART & SELF

Picture
“I love making art because of the freedom it provides. Being a part of the Creativity Caught Me Making program was amazing because it allowed me to truly express myself. Outside of art, I enjoy meeting with friends and gaming.” -Adam B. | 15 | Home School

"The types of art I create would be paintings, drawings, and sketches. When I create art I put my different types of emotions into it, it would mainly depend on the subject that I’m making my art on. I want my art to reach those who can relate to it and for them to know that they’re not alone with what they think/feel on the subject that I would make my art about. The subject would normally be about my emotions, the things that I am/was going through and about nature. Drawing, sketching, and painting are the different types of ways that I would like to be heard from in order for me to speak my mind and truth. I want to show others what I’m thinking and feeling in order to understand where I’m coming from and who I am/where I belong in this world. I want to be able to share my experiences through my art. I want to be able to be the voice that helps the others’ voices to be heard. I just want to be able to have a connection with others that can relate to my art." -Adanelly G. | 15 | Marine Leadership Academy

"My art style is pictures of things/memes and the occasional drawing, but otherwise mostly memes or handcrafted things." -Joseph L. | 15 | Disney II

"I love art because it gives me the opportunity to bring to life my imagination, thoughts, ideas, and more. I sketch, paint, and color, sometimes because it is soothing and gives me peace of mind. Art is a great way for one to express their emotions, thoughts, opinions, perspectives, etc. I use art to relax mostly because it gets me in a chill mood. When I am stressed, I write poems, when I am bored I doodle patterns, and when I am happy I do photography. Art allows one to connect to others and themselves. It is a good method of therapy and I would very much recommend it. Truly, “Earth without art is just eh”, so go try make art today!" - Victoire M. | 15 | Lane Tech

"I’m not the type of person to express myself so easily at first and drawing gave me the chance to put feelings and expression in the painting. Creativity Caught Me Making was an amazing way to learn new concepts and ideas.” - Taja R. | 16 | Butler College Prep

"I like to create art that is fun, and is fun to make. Whether it be immense euphoria or angry frustration, I use art to express sides of me that I can’t yet understand. Though I love doing all types of art, I usually enjoy digital art and sketching the most. I hope to create art that is more filled with emotion than my previous works." -Aneliz C. | 14 | Lane Tech

"My passions that are shown in more of my work are self-love, the different aspects of our minds, and possessions throughout my life that stay ahold in my intellect. I also draw things that involve society's problems such as discrimination, inequality, and possibly anything a Gen-Z could argue about. I'm a person who aspires to face all my fear throughout my time in this world and celebrate that growth throughout my life." -Julia M. | 14 | Curie High School

“This piece is part of what I hope to make into a larger series of shirts, bags, etc. with other famous figures from yesteryear that we discuss without discussing the full picture. It was inspired by conversations I’ve had with my friends, in which we have discovered that all kinds of people we hear about, and are taught of in school, and view the work of exist outside of the heterosexual norms that society imposes on those in it. Marilyn Monroe, the actress/model/icon, the woman we think of when we think 50s, had affairs with Joan Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, and multiple other women. It’s impossible to know how people of the past would label themselves today, so I condensed it to simply “Marilyn Monroe wasn’t straight”.” -Maggie D. | 15 | GCE Lab School

"Art to me is a way for me to express my true and inner feelings. Art calms me down, or reminds me of past feelings." - Rena F. | 14 | Disney II

"All bodies are normal. A pretty face is nice, but a brain can change the world." -Arrie M. | 15 | Perspective MSA Charter School

"My work focuses on the Chicano culture. Sometimes Chicano’s feel like they don’t belong to any group. It can make some of us feel like we have to choose a side or even favorites. In Mexico we are called “Norteño” and in the United States we are called “immigrants”. Or in some cases we are told “go back to your country”, but the reality is that we are born here and we are a mix of both cultures. We will never fit the social standards of the Mexican society or the American society. I will never be ashamed of the more pigment my skin has or even the more body hair I have or even the fact that I don’t speak perfect Spanish. I’ve learned to appreciate and love both cultures because at the end of the day that’s who I am." -Charis G. | 15 | Lincoln Park High School

"My work explores new ideas, new mediums, and growing with me as an artist. I am still figuring out meaning in my work, and my focus; but I am confident that I can handle anything that is thrown at me." -Emilia M. | Taft High School

"I love art in all its forms. The type of art I usually do are visual art forms, like painting and color pencils. My favorite mediums are watercolor and acrylic paint. I hope to find and explore many more different types of art and mediums in the future." - Alexandra F. | 15 | Disney II

These artworks are our self-directed projects that we created with the freedom to choose the topic and medium looking back at the art skills and socially engaged art practices we explored this Fall. The final projects proved us that we can be creative, daring, work from vulnerable spaces, experiment, and have fun with it.

US Air Force Veteran and Chicano Artist, Eric J. Garcia, visited us virtually from Minnesota to talk about his art practice. Some of us were particularly struck by Eric's remarks about looking at one’s history and felt super inspired to look at Chicano art for research for our final projects. A shout out to Eric for taking time to share his art practice with us!
