In Flanders Fields
By John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Jennifer Hufnagel, US Air Force Veteran and NVAM Development Director answers "What Veterans Day means to you?"

What does Veterans Day mean to you?

Freedom.

It has been many years since I’ve worn my uniform, but it is now, on this other side of service as a civilian with more than 15 years now spent in this second career of mine as a nonprofit fundraising professional -  that I truly understand, value, and respect the importance to always remember, honor, and give thanks to our veterans.

To me Veterans Day is every day of the year – not just one day of the year during the month of November, and it is my responsibility to not just say thank you, but to never stop thanking our nation’s veterans for the sacrifices they made while putting service before self so that I may live so free, each and every day I live and breathe as a citizen of this great country.

We must remember how much freedom cost, and we must be thankful. To all our veterans, and to those who current serve: thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and fighting to protect my freedom.
