About the Exhibition

A Century of Vision

Il Maestro! celebrates the centennial of Morton Levin, a Chicago-born artist and World War II veteran whose prolific career spans more than seven decades. Known affectionately as "Il Maestro" — the master — by his peers and students, Levin brought a rare combination of classical discipline and expressive urgency to every canvas.

Levin's work is rooted in the figurative tradition, yet charged with the emotional weight of a man who witnessed the full arc of the twentieth century — from the Great Depression through the battlefields of Europe to the cultural upheavals of postwar America. His paintings and drawings are acts of witness, rendered with unflinching honesty and deep humanity.

This centennial exhibition brings together a selection of paintings, drawings, and works on paper that trace the breadth of Levin's vision — portraits, landscapes, and scenes of everyday life transformed by a master's hand into enduring records of the human experience.

About the Artist

Morton Levin was born in Chicago in 1924 and studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before serving in the United States Army during World War II. His wartime experience profoundly shaped his artistic vision, instilling in him a commitment to bearing witness through art.

After the war, Levin returned to Chicago and built a distinguished career as both a painter and an educator, influencing generations of artists over more than five decades of teaching. His figurative work — portraits, nudes, cityscapes, and landscapes — is marked by a bold, confident line and a deep sensitivity to light and form.

Levin's legacy endures not only in his paintings but in the countless students he inspired to look closely, draw honestly, and paint with conviction. The National Veterans Art Museum is honored to celebrate his centennial and to present his work to a new generation of viewers.
