Relief in Place
The Collective Work of Veterans Healing Through Art
About the Exhibition
These Are Their Stories
Relief in Place invites us to engage with veterans who have found healing and connection through art. These pieces are created through NVAM's collaborator, CreatiVets, with work ranging from mixed media, paintings, sculpture, and photography by participants of the CreatiVets program.
Every participant is a combat veteran. These are their stories.
CreatiVets is a nonprofit organization that uses music and art to help veterans heal from post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. Through creative expression, veterans find new language for experiences that resist ordinary words — and in sharing that work, they offer the rest of us a window into the true cost and complexity of service.

Healing veterans through music and art
About CreatiVets
Founded in 2013, CreatiVets partners with leading music and art institutions to provide veterans with professional creative training and therapeutic support. Their programs have reached thousands of veterans across the country, helping participants process trauma, build community, and share their experiences with the public through exhibitions, recordings, and performances.
The National Veterans Art Museum has long championed the intersection of military service and artistic expression. Relief in Place deepens that mission by centering the voices of veterans whose healing journeys are inseparable from their creative practice — and whose work demands to be seen.
